We like to shine a light on the great teachers we work with in our partner schools.
This month we speak to Nandipha Sithole, a Grade R teacher at Molo Mhlaba Primary School in Khayelitsha, South Africa which provides education to girls.
Molo Mhlaba is a Pan-African school which focuses on iSTEAM (innovation, science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics) education to provide girls with a well-rounded education to develop young minds and put them on the path to success.
Molo Mhlaba has been part of the Breteau Foundation programme for five months.
How long have you been teaching?
“I have been teaching now for 5 years.”
What are the reasons you became a teacher?
“I am very passionate about children, about their well-being. That is what made me interested in becoming an Early Childhood Development (ECD) teacher.”
What’s your favourite part about being an ECD teacher?
“Young children are very friendly people, and I find it’s nice to be around them. It is easy to engage with small children. They are eager to learn and everyday they want to learn more things.”
Why do you think it’s important to use technology in education?
“It brings happiness to the children as well as to us teachers. It makes it easier to teach children, especially in numeracy. For example when we are counting they get to see what they are counting. They are able to see abstract concepts in a more concrete way.”
How has your confidence grown as a teacher through the Breteau Foundation teacher training programme?
“I have been part of the Breteau Foundation Teacher Training Programme for 4 months now. I previously did not have any prior training in education technology so its impact has given me confidence and has allowed me to be more comfortable with using technology in the class.”
What is the most interesting development you have seen in the classroom since using the Breteau Foundation tablets?
“The most interesting thing is seeing that the children are so comfortable with technology and they are always so excited to use the tablets.”
At the Breteau Foundation our mission is to improve academic engagement of disadvantaged children worldwide by empowering primary school teachers through digital technology and training.
