Today, the world celebrates Earth Day 2022!
Volunteer Writer: Anna Byrne
The Earth Day mission statement states:
It’s not a day, it’s a movement.
Earth Day
With this global mission in mind, the Breteau Foundation is delighted to play a part in helping empower and educate children (and their communities) to be the protectors of our planet.
BF have partnered with a globally popular Netflix animated children’s TV show. The episode will centre around the environmental issue of plastics and inspire children to become active changemakers in their communities.
For Earth Day 2022, we need to act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably). It’s going to take all of us. All in. Businesses, governments, and citizens — everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable. A partnership for the planet. Earth Day
Following Earth Day’s mission statement, BF recognizes the importance of using entertainment as a springboard to inspire further education and action on this global issue. This is why we have created a portfolio of workshops, with resources and lesson plans, which will be freely available and accompany the environmental episode. This project will be aimed at inspiring children between the ages of 7-11 years old to become advocates to reduce plastic and will be available on the BF website in 2023 in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and Norwegian.
The partnership will be officially announced next week and has been specifically created in tandem with the educational workshops, helping primary teachers and educators from around the world to deliver in their classrooms. The episode is designed by educators for educators, with lesson plans incorporating resources from the STEAM programme, as well as literacy and numeracy lesson plans which link to the curriculum.
‘Now is the time for the unstoppable courage to preserve and protect our health, our families, and our livelihoods.’ Earth Day
Around the world, everyday people are doing whatever they can to clean up plastic in their communities. On the Earth Day site, you can learn about the ‘Ploggers’ – a worldwide initiative of walkers and joggers who pick up plastic when they go out, which stops it from ending up in our beautiful rivers and oceans.
In Ghana, the Social Youth Drive Foundation works with local authorities and the Environment Protection Agency of Ghana to put bins for plastic water bottle disposal at every bus stop across the country. While there’s a drive to educate the young in the classrooms, there is also a future initiative to construct shops out of upcycled plastic material.
There are so many wonderful projects involving young people and their communities, and we’re proud to support them and promote the wonderful work of the Earth Day organisation.
We hope that with the BF workshops and the Netflix environmental episode, children feel empowered to become advocates of environmental change around the world, preserving the natural beauty of our planet for all who live on it.
